Goals for My Writing Next Year
This year, I have learned a lot about myself as a writer,
but I struggle in certain areas. I have noticed this when I was writing my
literary analysis, and that is that I have a weak vocabulary. Sometimes I’ll
find my writing as if I am talking to someone and it is not very formal. When I
have weak or broad words, my most prevalent resolution is that I will look up
synonyms for those words. I will think that I have found the perfect, descriptive
word when in reality, it does not fit in the context.
I have known for a while that reading strengthens people’s
vocabulary. I am not a fan of reading unless I have a book that connects to me
in some way, and the perfect book for me is not always the easiest to find. I
think that the best resolution is to read more so that I can broaden my
vocabulary. I set some reading goals for myself this summer, and I want to read
over the required number of books for summer reading. Normally, I just read the
bare minimum for summer reading, but I am going to change that for this summer.
Once I get in the habit of reading more often, maybe things will just click,
and I will read more from this point. Maybe I will see if I like books in third
person omniscient, limited, or in first person. I know that this will help me
in my vocabulary because an essay can sound so much stronger when just one good
and accurate vocabulary word is embedded.
