Writing Center Experiences

I met this past week with the writing center to gather helpful information for my revision of my personal narrative. My writing fellow and I spent time on making my writing “focus in” on an event. My personal narrative was about my summer camp experiences, but especially about “club” and how I grew and got to know Jesus better. “Club” was when the whole camp would go into a room and sing songs to praise Jesus. The goal of my essay was to show readers why this even was so special to me. At the beginning of my essay, I was just talking about camp in general, and it did not help the readers in knowing how “club” was special to me. One thing that I learned from my writing fellow that stuck out to me was when you read something, to ask yourself, “does this contribute to how camp changed me as a person?” If the answer is no, then I either need to take that paragraph out or edit it and make it connect.

This writing session was probably my most helpful one because now I have many ideas in how I can make my revision better. The writing fellow and I made a list about what “club “looked like so that the readers could have an image in their head as if I took a picture and was explaining what it looked like to them. We included the color of the walls, if it was cold or hot, time of day, the color of the flashing lights, and so on. I can already tell that this will help strengthen the centralized moment in my essay. I have already implanted some of the corrections, and my essay is already stronger.
